We were woken early with the rolling motion of the yacht and
the stronger than expected NW wind that put us on a lee shore. We had intended
to do the 3-4 hour walk to the homestead and say hello to the Island’s Lessee
but the conditions meant it was not possible. We had to move and we motored
around to the south east corner of the Island to Whites Bay. This is a magnificent bay and well protected
in any of the northerly winds. We stayed for the morning and explored ashore
before leaving to go to Hunter Island in the Duke Group of islands.
Whites Bay at Middle Percy Island
Combination of rugged beauty and natural beauty!!!
Echo Beach and Billabong leading the fleet at anchor in Whites Bay!!
As we left the wind was from the north at around 10 knots so we had to motor sail. On route I caught a spotted mackerel which kept me busy for
awhile filleting it.
We had lunch on the way and made it to the afternoon
anchorage by 5pm entering the passage between Marble Island and Hunter Island.
We were surprised by the number of yachts in the small anchorage but we managed
to fit in.
We had arrived at low tide and the conditions were calm but
as the tide rose and the current changed direction we had a shocking night of wind and waves on tidal flow that was ripping through at about 2 knots. We were kept sideways by the wind on the swell. We had intermittent sleep and were not happy campers in the morning. If we could have anchored in closer then it could have been a different story.
